Blower Motor Replacement

Blower motor replacement in an automobile may or may not be difficult, depending mostly on one major thing....how old your vehicle is. By most rules, the older your vehicle is, the easier it is to fix something like a blower motor.

Why? Well, the main reason is because of the level of technology. Take, for example, a truck from the mid-early seventies. Back then, the level of technology used on something like a blower motor was mostly mechanical, with a little bit of electricity involved. In essence, you had a fan that was attached to a motor, which was outfitted with an electric control that would cause it to blow at a certain speed (the speed at which the controls were set at).

Fixing something like this was pretty simple, because it usually involved buying a new piece, putting it on, and putting the car back together after you were done. So, the job was mostly mechanical, and the science was on a level that was easy to understand for about anybody who was handy with screwdrivers and wrenches.

But blower motor replacement on a brand new car is exponentially more difficult. Why? Well, for one thing, there is so much more packed beneath the dashboard now on vehicles. The computer alone is much, much bigger than it used to be. Plus, there are electronics for everything.

On new cars, we have gone from a basic mechanical design to one that, in essence, takes a degree in computer engineering to understand! The electronic components are so intricate and technologically advanced, that unless you have either a very advanced understanding of automobile construction or electrical engineering, you are going to be very, very lost. It is not that people are less smart.....it is just that the technology is getting a lot more advanced.

Blower motor replacement basically involves taking apart the dashboard, diagnosing the problem, replacing the bad parts, and reassembling the dashboard (in most cases, anyway). The blower motor is what you are controlling when you turn the heat up or down, or when you use the air conditioning controls. The blower blows the air at the speed you specify on the controls, while a routing system routes it through the appropriate vents, which are also determined by you through the use of controls.

There are several ways in which you can know that blower motor replacement is necessary. Of course, if your blower stops working, then you know that it is time to change something. Also, if your blower gets stuck just blowing on the most powerful setting, you know that you have a problem somewhere.

If your blower sounds like it is working fine, but you have no air coming out of the right vents, then you might actually have an air-routing problem as opposed to a blower motor resistors problem. For most blower motor replacements, you will want to take your vehicle (especially if it is new) to either the dealership or a professional automobile mechanic.
